Graphic Fiction - Practising digital 'painting'

I had my first intended sketch for Graphic Fiction Assignment 2 still lying around. Whilst it hadn't worked for the assignment, I still liked the composition and idea of the image.

So I decided to try and see if I could use it as a one-off illustration.

Rather than take a normal comics colouring approach, I decided to try and use as much of a painterly approach as possible. I wanted to try and use a limited and consistent palette as well as use a set of Procreate brushes that would mimic using real acrylic or oil paint.

I got to a point where I was adding details fairly successfully, but I really didn't like the style of the work that was coming through, so I decided to leave the image where it was. Here's my process of trying things out:

There are some bit that I am really pleased with - when I was doing the face I really started to get the hang of specular highlights and subsurface scattering in the ears and nose. But overall I really just think that stylistically this didn't feel right for me. I wonder if it's my general art skills or taking a painterly approach is just not my strong suit?
