Illustration 1, Exercise 2.1

Updated: Sep 11, 2019

I am often attracted to the illustrations of The New Yorker magazine. They are often captivating in their own right, but I appreciate their nuance. You are rewarded by lingering a little. The images often have political commentary and/or satire under the surface.

This was particularly true for my chosen image [1]. Safe Travels is quite innocuous at first, but then really creates tension through its strong narrative. The New Yorker has used R Kikuo Johnson for a number of covers, so is familiar with his style.

Theme & Art Direction:

The theme for August is summer, and we have a variety of articles exploring this subject. We’re looking for something that typifies the traditional American holiday season, but have it based very much in the present day. It should give the readers a feeling of nostalgia and the feeling of a summer holiday. Feel free to explore a range of colours to evoke that feeling.

We’d really love you to use your experience in exploration and the outdoors and see that come through in the image. We’re focusing on people, so please use the environment as a way of accompanying the people, who should be the centre of the narrative.

Deadline:

The final submission deadline for this illustration is July 7 2018, I’d like to see options for 2 roughs in the next couple of weeks so we can discuss direction for the final piece.

Other notes:

We’re happy with your normal approach to producing the artwork, but for clarity of print we’d prefer any colouring to be done digitally.
