This exercise seemed a bit different, as there wasn't a final illustration to make. I have been doing sketchnotes and graphic recording/facilitation for many years as part of my personal and professional practice, so visual metaphors have always been something I have been comfortable with.
Even still, I took time to research recent editions of magazines, as editorial illustrations are often a good place to find great visual metaphors. I then proceeded to choose the subject "censorship of the press" and create some visual metaphors around the subject in my sketchbook, the results are below:
I really like coming up with metaphors, but I found it harder to work with a blanket topic rather than a specific situation / thing. When I showed the metaphor sketches to my wife she understood most of them, the only one that she didn't get was the ear defenders on the building - she couldn't tell if they were headphones or not!
