The objective of this exercise was to start from the following possible themes:
Festival, The morning after, Summertime, & Workshop.
I opted for the morning after, mainly because most of the other learning logs that I had studied seemed to opt for workshop, using tools. Well when I started this it was horrible weather, and I really didn't want to go to the garage! So "The Morning After" it was.
I started, as directed, to take photos of my little display of items. I did my best to vary the distance and angle of the viewfinder:
Once I had done this, I decided to craft a viewfinder out of paper
I wasn't happy with it though, as it seemed too close to the aspect ratio of my camera. So I did another that I was more happy with:
Using this viewfinder I then used it as a template to create thumbnails in my exercise sketchbook. Using the viewfinder I re-inspected the arrangement, sketching each time I found myself on an interesting perspective:
I considered each of them for the final step. The topic was "the morning after" - a natural conclusion to that phrase could be 'the morning after pill' which got me thinking not of contraception, but of the concoction of painkillers and vitamins I need to take after I have had a heavy night out. Hangovers are merciless.
I decided this best fit the theme, and chose thumbnail 3 to proceed - the pills were nondescript so open to interpretation, yet still in the context of the theme. The other formats didn't really have the same narrative, asking too many questions of the viewer. As I moved around the layout, I did realise, that with such a narrow viewfinder it was hard for all the perspectives to convey the message. I thought about fundamentally rearranging the objects, but the pills gave me the narrative I was looking for, so I only decided to rearrange that smaller part of the whole.
I moved onto the final pencil piece to convey the theme, and here is the result:
I am happy with the composition, and I felt really liberated to not be perfect in the render. I think the image really conveys the composition and elements. The headphones are less obvious, but with the composition I have chosen I think it suits to emphasise the pills as the focus of the image.
