Illustration Sketchbooks - Exercise 3.5: Free Association

Writer's picture: Dan WoodwardDan Woodward

I have long been a fan of doodling, and it can be found in a lot of my workbooks amongst other scribbles and visualisations. I enjoyed reading the article about the cognitive benefits and it supported other reading I have done in the past about these effects and the benefits of Sketchnoting.

I had a few doodles in my old smaller sketchbook. However most of my doodles are much more random, and whilst I am at work, so they are harder to collate. As I had just finished my first A6 sketchbook when I started a new A6 one I made a conscious effort to have it on me at work more. I pulled it out any time there was some downtime and allowed my brain and hand to riff together. As the cover to the new book was white, I even doodled a zen-like fox onto the cover! You can see the rest of my results so far below:

I will probably pick up more doodles as the unit progresses, and will try and give my brain more space to do this kind of free association in situations outside of my work.
