Practice & Research - Exercise 0.4: Reflective Commentary

Writer's picture: Dan WoodwardDan Woodward

For this exercise, I was asked to produce my first reflective commentary, an opportunity to revisit key learning moments, project outcomes and think about my creative strategies. I am not sure what to cover at such an early stage of this unit, given that all I have done so far is to create a high-level strategy for the unit itself.

I have appreciated the opportunity to collate my thoughts and create some order from the jumble of ideas and connections that have been floating around in my head. I have an adaptable plan, clear outcomes to aim for, and projects that I am invested in making the most of. I am going to select the 'Combining Influences' project to build upon the self-directed work I completed at the end of Illustration 2. One of my biggest blockers and areas of frustration is when I get to the rendering stage of an illustration, where I have to play with colour, light and tone.

I have not created a repeatable approach to doing this that is efficient enough to match my inherent impatience and that combines aspects that I enjoy. I searched, researched, and attempted approaches from various learning resources, but none of those approaches seemed to fit. On top of that, the approaches that call to me don't seem to have a lot of information on how to accomplish them.

So, my initial focus is to create an illustration equivalent of a starter dough - a mother yeast that I can start to bake into my future work. I hope that this will reduce my frustration and open me up to being more adventurous and creative, knowing that I won't hit the same wall over and over. I'll cover my aspirations in more detail as I start that project, but I am excited to enter this chrysalis, work hard, experiment and use my curiosity to push through the frustration.

Based on my mind map, I will be looking at the following:

Mind map with "Influences" central node. Branches include names, techniques like linework, colors, and styles. Green lines and text.

Notes to my tutor

I would like feedback on areas of reading and research that might help me come up with my own version of a hybrid traditional/digital approach that uses watercolour, textures, layering, and digital layer modes. If there are other areas that I might be inspired by, please let me know. I'd love to research other artistic approaches from which I might be able to 'magpie' ideas!
