Responding to a Brief - Research 1.3: Visual Language

Throughout my degree, I have collected visual references and imagery. I have never really been one to keep visual diaries or grab files, I have tended to use digital ways to save ideas, inspiration and references. Two ways that seem to work well for me are Pinterest boards and PureRef collections.

I do think that often I use both of these in the functional context of researching a brief, but from time to time I have explored things like influences:

I thought it would be a good opportunity to review my collections and curate the content. As I've not spent a lot of time with them recently, it's good to see what I can add, especially after all the research I completed in task 1.1. I decided to create some dedicated sections for comics as well as tabletop-related images.

And then finally, I thought it would be good to create a board where I can just add things that catch my eye are I am perusing art day-to-day. A place for the random and the disconnected. It doesn't need to be themed, just interesting. My thought is that over time as this builds my brain might start to make connections between the elements and that will seep into my own work.

I think through all of the things I have selected line and colour feature a lot. I seem to be drawn to pop culture, as well as science fiction. I like character design as well as images that have a strong sense of place and/or narrative. These are elements that I can have at the back of my mind when creating my own work.
