Responding to a Brief - Research 5.4:Potential client SWOT analysis

For this research task, I was asked to imagine that I am a freelance illustrator who is getting ready to take on client-led work. Well, given my current work status, I am looking for any source of income and so have had to put myself into that area whether I think I am ready or not! So this task to fictitiously consider pros and cons became a real tool to look at two potential engagements.

The task asked me to use the SWOT analysis technique to assess the potential venture. This confused me a bit initially, as SWOT analysis is usually used to analyse your own (or a competitor's) business. Applying it as a pro/con list for taking on work was not something I was familiar with. However, I found the intention interesting and pragmatic given I may need to complete real briefs soon. I created the SWOT grid and came up with notes for each section within the context of the engagements rather than 'me' as a business.

Reflections

While not the way that I would typically use SWOT analysis, I think the exercise was useful, especially given that these are real-world leads and not made up for the research task. One of them may be a fit for Assignment Five; as such, this is a prudent first step when considering taking on client-led work. It also highlights areas I need to focus on sooner rather than later if I want to ramp up working professionally as an illustrator.

While I have done research and read about working with clients before, I plan to revisit my collection of books that cover different aspects of the subject so that my knowledge feels fresh and I can present a persona that is as professional as possible.
